MESSIAEN AND SHOSTAKOVICH: CONCERTGEBOUWORKEST STREAMED CONCERT

Klaus Mäkelä made such an impression with his Concertgebouworkest debut in September that the orchestra invited him back on the spot. Now he’s back to conduct a programme featuring powerful milestones by Messiaen and Shostakovich.

In a concert that will be streamed on 14 May, “Klaus Mäkelä leads the Concertgebouworkest in two works which have become undisputed milestones of the twentieth century thanks to their emotional and dramatic power. Les offrandes oubliées firmly put the composer Olivier Messiaen, whose career was just starting off, on the map. It unfolds like a miniature symphony full of subdued tension and energy. Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10 vividly portrays tragedy, biting humour and a fear of death. The fierce second movement functions as a caricature of Josef Stalin, who died that same year.”

Watch the stream: 14 May, 20.00 CET via concertgebouworkest.nl, Facebook and YouTube.
