Concertgebouworkest

“Although Stravinsky’s music has no weaknesses, it was mainly the perspective on the dramaturgy of the whole that was enriching. Mäkelä masterfully controlled the arc of suspense, provided clarity and excitement, and when the highlights came in the finale – the ‘Hell Dance’, the ‘Weeping Song’ – the effect was cathartic. I have rarely heard these songs as sensationally well as the Concertgebouw Orchestra played.“

NRC, Joep Stapel 15 December 2022

“On Wednesday evening, the Concertgebouw Orchestra played a sublime concert. Just before 2023, it was one of the best concerts of the outgoing year, Joep Stapel wrote in NRC. And he’s absolutely right. It was a concert to put a gold frame around, a historic evening … You felt the sheer joy among musicians and conductor at their still fledgling union. You heard the confidence the musicians have in their prospective chief. All those treacherous and tricky stakes in Stravinsky’s complete ballet music for L’oiseau de feu sounded perfectly natural here. As if Mäkelä had instilled a dose of extra guts into his musicians in rehearsals.“
